- Bonus Lecture: “The History of Pitch as it Relates to the Modern Day Symphonic Oboist”Organized and hosted by Dr. Carrie Vecchione in 1998, the John de Lancie Master Classes were recorded for the purpose of preserving the legacy of this 20th Century Master, who was the successor to Marcel Tabuteau as solo oboist of the Philadelphia Orchestra from 1954 to 1977. Those recordings have now been compiled into a 10-DVD set produced by David Weber and Ferald Capps.
The introductory lecture, “Phrasing is the Art of Defining, While Playing, the Grammatical Structure of Music,” is a straightforward and thorough exposition of the concepts which underscored everything Mr. de Lancie taught to his students at The Curtis Institute of Music and elsewhere. Because these ideas are musically universal, and since his main emphasis is on phrasing rather than just oboe playing, any musician would benefit from listening to these master classes.
The goal of understanding the grammatical structure of music is to make the player musically self-sufficient. Although the concepts put forward in this lecture are easy to understand intellectually, the master classes will illustrate the importance of being able to listen carefully to oneself while playing.
“A must for every music library.”
